Nest, dedicated to changing the lives of women in developing countries, supports women artists and artisans in the developing world by helping them create sustainable entrepreneurial businesses. To do this, Nest provides micro-credit loans to assist with the purchase of materials necessary to begin and/or maintain craft-based businesses.
The Latin American Youth Center’s Girls’ Youth Leadership Program offers 12-18 year-old girls programming to develop self-esteem and leadership skills, and empower those at risk of gang involvement in their communities. Activities range from dance and theater classes to self-defense and health communication workshops.
The Women’s Collective (TWC) meets the self-defined needs of women, girls, and their families living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS. By reducing barriers to care and strengthening the network of support available to these women and girls, TWC provides a safe, non-judgmental environment where services are peer-led, woman- and girl-focused, and culturally appropriate. TSF is pleased to offer a second grant, this time in the amount of $750, to the following organization:
Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia employs exercise, goal-setting, and mentoring to help girls realize leadership potential, build self-esteem, and hone their social skills. Upon completion of a curriculum and a 5K race, girls acquire a tangible sense of accomplishment, with the potential that they will continue to use physical activity and positive social etiquette as a way to evolve into their best selves.

Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia employs exercise, goal setting, and mentoring to help girls realize leadership potential, build self-esteem, and hone their social skills. There is a significant commitment on behalf of coaches and participants who meet twice per week to complete a 24-lesson curriculum. Upon completion of the lessons and a 5K race, girls in the program have a tangible sense of accomplishment, with the potential that they will continue to use physical activity and positive social etiquette as a way to evolve into their best selves.
Girls in Technology (GIT), a project of Women in Technology, serves an important and underserved need for girls and young women by engaging them in technology and computer-related learning. Programs including summer camps, mentoring, and school computer clubs have helped girls in DC learn technology, math, and science, in addition to leadership skills. GIT focuses on economically and socially disadvantaged girls in an effort to ensure these girls become the next generation of professional women.
The giving must go on! If you’d like to be a well-wisher of future TSF grant recipients whose mission is in line with that of TSF, please make a tax deductible donation. Your generous support will thoughtfully improve the experiences and enhance the blossoming potential of young women in DC.
